With the win, the Sooners improve to 4-1 on the year in dual competition.
NORMAN, Okla. --
The No. 10 University of Oklahoma wrestling squad improved to 4-1 Sunday evening with a 31-9 victory over Binghamton University at McCasland Field House.
"Overall, I think it was pretty good test for us," explained Oklahoma head coach Mark Cody. "I was really stressed about those first couple of weight classes, but getting through that and coming out with a couple of wins was good for us going forward.
"We had a pretty good plan for them and it worked out well," he continued.
The Sooners only dropped three matches on the night in a contest that saw No. 141 pounder Kendric Maple remain undefeated in 2012 with a 4-0 dual record.
"Kendric just looked incredible," said Cody. "He looked like a national champion and that's the way I'm sure he is going to wrestle all year long.
"He's going to be really tough to stop."
Freshman Matt Reed continued the success of his rookie campaign with his third pin of the season in the 174-pound matchup. It's a team leading total for the Sooners who have collected seven pins on the year.
"For Reed to go out there like that, against such a strong opponent - was extremely encouraging to see," explained Cody.
"Once he gets some one on their back, he goes after them. He's gotten a few pins for us this year and I think he's just going to get better and better.
"To get that six points up on the board, that's great, especially from such a young guy," remarked Cody.
An early takedown by Kyle Garcia in the 125-pound match started competition for the Sooners. An injury timeout for Binghamton's Patrick Hunter paused the match, but once action resumed, Garcia built a 7-5 lead at the end of the first period that would push him toward the win. Garcia totaled two reversals and used 1:43 riding time to win a 12-9 decision.
Cody Brewer struck first with a takedown seven seconds in to the 133 pound match and never looked back. Taking a 10-4 advantage into the final period, Brewer reversed on Binghamton wrestler and Broken Arrow, Okla. native Derek Steeley to snag on to a 13-4 major decision.
Top-ranked Maple was quick to dispose of the Bearcat's Dan Riggi in the 141-pound bout, with a 22-5 tech fall in 3:32. Maple built a 17-4 lead in the first period and scored his final five points with a takedown, near fall and 2:19 riding time advantage to earn a 22-4 tech fall.
Senior Bubby Graham, the No. 6 165-pounder, built a quick 11-3 advantage in the first period and took a 19-6 major decision over the Bearcat's Vincent Grella.
Freshman Matt Reed got the MacCasland Field House crowd on their feet in the 174 pound match with a pin on the Bearcat's Ben Price for his third of the season.
Heavyweight Keldrick Hall got the Sooners back to its winning ways with a 6-3 victory over Tyler Dueul.
Despite the loss, two Sooners battled hard against Binghamton's top-ranked wrestlers Sunday night.
Binghamton's No. 3 Donnie Vinson took on No. 8 Nick Lester in the 149-pound match of the night. Lester knocked Vinson out of the 2012 NCAA Championships, but it was Vinson's turn tonight as he outlasted Lester, scoring a late takedown and riding time advantage to take a 9-2 decision.
Wrestling fans then got more than what they paid for in the 197 pound match, as freshman Greg Wilson took Binghamton's Cody Reed to double overtime before Reed won 7-5. Reed's decision cut into OU's lead 28-6, which was followed by another Bearcat victory by No. 7 197-pounder Nate Schiedel. Schiedel scored a 13-6 decision over Nolan McBryde.
Throughout the match, OU honored members of the United State's armed forces as part of OU's Military Appreciation night. Veterans from all five branches were on hand to see the Sooners take a 31-9 victory.
The Sooners host their biggest dual of the 2012 next weekend when they welcome in-state rival No. 3 Oklahoma State for the Bedlam Dual at McCasland Field House. Wrestlers will take to the mat at 2 p.m. CT with doors opening at 1 p.m. CT.
