NORMAN, Okla. -- Four University of Oklahoma men’s tennis players will compete in the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships that begin Thursday, Nov. 8, at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
“Making the National Indoors is a great accomplishment for our players,” OU head coach John Roddick said. “It is the toughest tournament to qualify for all year and to have four players playing is a great accomplishment.”
ITA preseason No. 28 Guillermo Alcorta clinched a spot in the singles draw of the indoor championships after winning the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championships.
The Sooners are also sending two doubles tandems.
Alcorta and his doubles partner, Axel Alvarez Llamas, qualified after winning the doubles championships at the ITA Central Regional Championships.
OU’s No. 1 doubles team of Costin Paval and Dane Webb nabbed a spot as an at-large selection and are the No. 4 seed in doubles competition.
“The four guys that qualified to go have shown that they are some of the best players in the country,” assistant coach Bo Hodge said. “I’m excited to see how they do this weekend.”
The championships feature a 32-player singles field and 20-team doubles field.
