NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma junior John Warden was eliminated from, then reinstated to, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships after pre-qualifying rounds completed Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Warden, a Tulsa native, beat Virginia Tech's Mauricio Antun, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, earlier Sunday, before losing to Memphis's Joe Salisbury, 7-6, 6-2, in the fourth and final round of pre-qualifying. However, a withdrawal of another competitor allowed Warden to be added to the qualifying draw.
Warden will join teammates ITA No. 57 Peerakit Siributwong, No. 97 Dane Webb and freshmen Axel Alvarez Llamas and Leonard Stakhovsky in the singles qualifying rounds Monday. The duos of Webb and Alvarez Llamas and Siributwong and Stakhovsky will also compete in the qualifying rounds in doubles that start Tuesday, Oct. 2.
No. 28 Guillermo Alcorta takes the court in the main draw Thursday, Oct. 4. The Sooner junior automatically qualified for the main draw after finishing his 2011-12 campaign ranked No. 2 in the Central Region.
