NORMAN, Oklahoma - Paul Lockwood, Oklahoma's head men's tennis coach since 1988, is retiring from that position. He is moving to a coordinating role in the operation of the recently-opened Gregg Wadley Tennis Pavilion on the OU campus.

"Paul has been a wonderful ambassador for our program," said OU Vice President and Athletics Director Joe Castiglione. "His dealings with peers, opponents, student-athletes and donors have always reflected the class with which he has represented himself as our head coach. We greatly appreciate his service."

Lockwood is grateful for his time at Oklahoma and looks forward to continuing his service.

"I want to thank the University of Oklahoma for allowing me to be their men's tennis coach for the past 22 years. I will most definitely miss my players because they are a special group of young men. I look forward to working with Athletic Director Joe Castiglione in the months to come."

Lockwood, a former standout player for the Sooners, was 325-211 in 22 seasons as OU's head coach. He was named conference coach of the year in 1991 and 1992 and his teams won 13 singles and nine double championships on the conference level.

As a player for OU, Lockwood was the Big Eight Conference champion at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in 1976 when he was captain of the league title team.

After completing his college career, Lockwood spent one season as an assistant coach at OU before being named the head coach at Tulsa. He remained with the Golden Hurricane for one season before hitting the professional circuit for two years.

After working as a professional at private tennis clubs, the Tulsa native returned to Oklahoma as the head coach in 1988. The search to hire a new coach will begin immediately according to Castiglione.
