ATHENS, Ga. -- Freshman Lawrence Formentera clinched the match for 20th-ranked Oklahoma over No. 3 Texas, 4-2, to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga. The Sooners will face Roddick's alma mater, No. 11 Georgia, in quarterfinal action Sunday, at 4 p.m.

"It was an unbelievable effort," head coach John Roddick said. "I have never been prouder of a group of guys in my entire life."

The Sooners win over the Longhorns was the program's first since 2005 and the second time ever in the all-time series.

Despite dropping battles at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions OU was still able to pull out the victory over the Longhorns.  

OU's No. 2 doubles team comprised of juniors Ionut Beleleu and David Pultr were never on the same page as UT's Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico defeated the Sooner duo, 8-3.

Texas secured the doubles portion after winning a heated match at No. 3 doubles, which pitted Oklahoma's senior Blake Boswell and freshman Lawrence Formentera against the Longhorns' Jean Anderson and Vasko Mladenov. The Sooners duo jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but the Longhorns answered quickly taking a 3-2 advantage. The OU tandem gained their composer and took the lead at 5-3. However, the Longhorns rallied to take the match, 8-6.

The final spot, which was suspended, saw senior Andrei Daescu and freshman Costin Paval take an early 3-0 advantage over UT's Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala at the No. 1 spot. The talented OU tandem dropped the next seven points to the Longhorns.

OU's Paval evened the score, 1-1, after he routed UT's Kellen Damico at the No. 3 position, 6-4, 6-1. The Big 12 Freshman of Year has now won five-straight at the No. 3 spot and boasts a 19-4 dual record.

The Longhorns took a 2-1 lead after Kutrovsky defeated Daescu in straight sets at the No. 1 spot.

65th-ranked Beleleu evened the score at two-all after he took care of business over UT's Ed Corrie at the No. 2 position, 6-4, 6-3.

Pultr gave Oklahoma its first lead of the match after he defeated UT's Anderson at No. 4. Pultr rallied from a 0-4 deficit to take the first set, 7-6, and the Czech native duplicated that score in the second set. The junior has won eight of his last nine matches and is 16-8 on the year.

Roughly two hours later, freshman Lawrence Formentera clinched the match for the Sooners after going three sets with the Longhorns Vasko Mladenov at the No. 6 spot. The Colton, Calif., native dropped his first set 2-6 but rallied to take the next two sets, 7-6, 7-5.

"I knew the team was relying on me and George (Chanturia)," freshman Lawrence Formentera said. "They were both really close matches, but I knew that If it came down to me I was the better player. George kept me in there. I just went for it."

Formentera is 6-3 on the year when the match goes to a third set.

"That was one heck of a match," head coach John Roddick. "Lawrence is one heck of a freshman. He fought and scrapped."
