WACO, Texas – The 26th-ranked Oklahoma men’s tennis team fell to No. 7 Baylor, 4-3, on Friday in Waco, Texas.

Oklahoma (13-5, 2-2 Big 12) kept with Baylor (17-3, 4-0 Big 12) for the entirety of the match before falling in a tiebreaker during the third set of the No. 6 singles matchup. Baylor remains undefeated in Big 12 play and has won nine straight matches. 

“We lost a heartbreaker tonight,” said OU head coach John Roddick. “We had two team match points and just didn’t get over the hump. I am extremely proud of my team’s effort and heart. If we fight like that, good things will happen for this team.”

In the doubles portion, Lawrence Formentera and Laurentiu Gavrila defeated Kike Grangeiro and Julian Bley at the No. 3 position, 8-5. The Sooner duo’s win wouldn’t be enough to claim the doubles point, with Baylor winning at the No. 2 and 3 positions to jump to a 1-0 lead. 

The Bears built on their quick lead in the singles portion, where Jordan Rux defeated OU’s Peerakit Siributwong at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-2, to give Baylor a 2-0 lead.

The Sooners bounced back starting with a win at the No. 4 position by Gavrila, 7-6, 6-4. Formentera then defeated Kike Grangeiro at the No. 5 position, 6-4, 6-3, to tie the match at two points apiece. 

Oklahoma then took the lead when Costin Paval took down Sergio Ramirez at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. The OU lead wouldn’t last for long, with Baylor’s John Peers beating Ionut Beleleu at the No. 1 position, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.

With the match tied at three, all eyes turned to court No. 6 where OU’s Tsvetan Mihov was facing Dennis Lengseld. After suffering a 6-1 loss in the first set, Mihov fought back to take the second set, 6-4. Lengseld would eventually take the game in a tight third set, 7-6, sealing the match for Baylor.

The Sooners face another ranked Big 12 opponent Sunday when they travel to No. 22 Texas Tech.
