Men's Tennis Earns Sixth Straight Win

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 21st-ranked Oklahoma men’s tennis team earned its sixth-straight win on Sunday after OU earned a 5-2 victory over No. 25 Texas A&M at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Sunday.

The Sooners (12-3, 2-0 Big 12) are undefeated in Big 12 play after OU took down 13th-ranked Texas, 5-2, on Friday. Additionally, each of Oklahoma’s six consecutive win have all come on the road.

“We did a great job sweeping the doubles today,” John Roddick said. “Our doubles has really become a strength. It gave us a lot of momentum going into singles, where Costin (Paval) did a tremendous job of getting off the court quick at No. 1.”

Oklahoma took the early lead after sweeping the doubles portion of the match. Seventy-first ranked Tsvetan Mihov and Peerakit Siributwong were the first to conclude action at the No. 2 position where the duo downed A&M’s Alexis Kelgou and Colin Hoover, 8-2.

Lawrence Formentera and David Pultr earned an 8-6 win at the No. 3 spot over Niall Angus and John Lewis.

OU’s 13th-ranked duo comprised of Costin Paval and Dane Webb closed out the sweep at the No. 1 spot where the duo defeated the Aggie’s Junior Ore and Withrow, ranked No. 30, 9-8.

In singles action, Roddick’s squad went on to win battles at No. 1, 2, 5 and 6 to run away with their second Big 12 win.

Paval, ranked No. 13, was the first to dispose of his opponent at the No. 1 position where the Romanian native defeated A&M’s Kleqou, 6-4, 6-0.

The nation’s 90th-ranked Guillermo Alcorta gave OU a 3-0 advantage after he took down the Aggie’s Ore, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot.

Hoover gave A&M its first win after he downed OU’s Mihov, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 3 spot.

Freshman sensation, Webb, clinched the match for OU from his No. 5 position. The nation’s 94th-ranked singles player dropped his first set, 6-3, to the Aggie’s Jeremy Efferding, but rallied to take the next two sets, 6-3, 6-4.

Siributwong became the Sooners second causality after he fell to A&M’s John Lewis, ranked No. 103, at the No. 4 spot.

The final match to conclude was at the No. 6 spot where OU’s Pultr rallied after dropping his first set to take the final two sets, 7-6, 7-5.

“It was a great weekend for us and we need to focus heading into the rest of the season,” Roddick added.

Next up, Oklahoma travels to Houston, Texas, on Sunday, April 8 at 11 a.m. to take on the Rice Owls.
