Sooners Blank Phoenix, 7-0

Oklahoma improves to 4-1; faces Arkansas next Sunday

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - No. 36 Oklahoma (4-1) shutout Wisconsin-Green Bay (1-4) on Sunday morning, by a margin of 7-0 at Minnesota's Baseline Center.

OU did not lose a singles match against the Phoenix going a perfect 6-0 and only dropped one doubles match.

Andrei Daescu and Federico Chavarria started the match off for the Sooners in No. 1 doubles defeating Tim Prudlow and Mark Goldin, 8-4.

In No. 2 doubles Sergey Avdeyev and Alex Joitoiu were defeated by Matt Clegg and Matt Keesey, 8-4.

The Sooners took the point in doubles as Ryan Thomas and Vlad Marinescu overpowered Eric Plaushines and Brian Zaron, 8-4.

"I am very pleased with this victory because of the way we dominated," head coach Paul Lockwood said. "We could have come out sluggish after playing late yesterday but we focused and played very, very solid tennis."

Daescu stayed perfect on the season, moving to 5-0 after winning his No. 1 singles match against Tim Prudlow, 6-4, 6-4.

"I'm happy to stay undefeated but that is not my main focus coming into matches," Daescu said. "My number one goal is to help this team win and get the team victory, which is what comes first for me."

Playing No. 2 singles, Avdeyev defeated Goldin, 6-2, 6-7, 10-0. The win put the Sooners up 3-0.

Marinescu wrapped up the match for Oklahoma in No. 3 singles as he swept Clegg winning, 6-1, 6-4.

Joitoiu got back on the winning track defeating Keesey, (4-6), 6-2, 10-7 in No. 4 singles. OU moved ahead 5-0 with the freshman's victory.

"My hope is that we can continue playing at the rate we did today because we will be facing some tough opponents in the next two weeks," Lockwood continued. "And to come away with victories we need to play the way we did today"

Chavarria picked up his second consecutive victory in as many days at No. 5 singles. The San Jose, Costa Rica senior defeated Plaushines, 6-1, 6-2.

Rounding out the day for the Sooners was Thomas who overwhelmed John Brough, 6-0, 6-3.

The Sooners return home Sunday, Feb. 17, as they host Arkansas at Willow Creek Golf and Country Club in Oklahoma City at 11 a.m.
