Men's Tennis defeats ODU, 5-2

NORFOLK, Va. -- The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team picked up its second victory of the 2008 season as it defeated Old Dominion, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, Va.
 
"This was a great win for our team and what makes it even more important is that it came on the road," head coach Paul Lockwood said.
 
In singles action, Andrei Daescu defeated Aleksandr Seleznev, 7-6, 6-2 to earn the first point in the match for the Sooners in No 1 singles.  Ionut Beleleu followed that up with a win in No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-4, over Eidy Igarashi.  The victory put Oklahoma up 2-0.

Sergey Avdeyev dropped his No. 3 singles match to Tobias Fanselow, (6-1), 3-6, 1-6.  Freshman Vlad Marinescu dropped his match to Rodrigo Souza, 6-4, (7-5), 6-4, in No. 4 singles.

Alex Joitoiu put Oklahoma back on the winning track with a 6-3, 7-6, victory over Matt Fawcett in No. 5 singles.  Oklahoma won the match going up 4-0 with a victory in No. 6 singles as senior Federico Chavarria defeated Matt Fawcett, 6-3, 7-6
 
"We fought back after ODU tied the match at 2-2 and played some very solid tennis," Lockwood continued.  "Not only did we win the match but we showed toughness mentally and physically in doing so."
 
In doubles action Chavarria and Daescu, playing No. 1 doubles, defeated Souza and Fanselow, 9-8.  The No. 2 doubles team of Beleleu and Ryan Thomas lost 8-4, to Igarashi and Seleznev.

Avdeyev and Joitoiu finished out the night for OU winning in No. 3 doubles, 8-4 over Fawcett and Alex Funkhouser.

Oklahoma continues play tomorrow as they will face No. 31 Virginia Commonwealth.
 
The Sooners continue on the road next weekend when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to face Minnesota on Feb. 9, and Wisconsin-Green Bay on Feb. 10.
