STANFORD, Calif. – Head coach John Roddick’s 45th-ranked Sooners (2-0) defeated No. 44 San Diego State 6-1, Friday, in the opening match of the National Team Indoor Qualifier hosted by the University Stanford.

“Our team played very well today,” said head coach John Roddick. ”The most important thing is we played good, solid, disciplined tennis. I think it showed when some of the sets got a little closer. We were able to execute and not make unforced errors in tighter positions.”

OU started out the match taking the critical doubles point. At the No. 1 position junior Ionut Beleleu teamed with junior David Pultr to take down the Aztecs Achim Ceban and Juan Gomez, 8-4.

Seniors Andrei Daescu and Blake Boswell combined to form the No. 2 team for the Sooners. The duo handily defeated SDSU’s Luis Rattenhuber and Giovanni Vaglietti, 8-1.

In singles action the Sooners had no issues at their top-three positions as all three won handily. Freshman Costin Paval (No. 69 nationally) was the first Sooner to finish his match. He defeated San Diego State’s Andre Feliz, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 3 position.

At the No. 2 position Beleleu (No. 59) defeated Vaglietti of SDSU, 6-4, 6-2. Daescu (No. 10) continued his reign at the No. 1 position and did not disappoint. He defeated the Aztec’s Achim Ceban, 6-4, 6-3.

Freshman Lawrence Formentera continued the Sooners winning ways defeating Jakob Kowalski in three sets, 6-2, 6-7, 1-0.

Sophomore George Chanturia held down the No. 6 position for Oklahoma. He also won in three sets, defeating SDSU’s Tim Schulz van Endert, 7-6, 7-6.

OU will face No. 9 Stanford tomorrow at 4 p.m. (CST), after they cruised past No. 57 UNC-Wilmington, 6-1. The winner of tomorrows match will be invited to play in the National Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 12-15 in Charlottesville, Va.

“They have got some experienced guys and they are a very strong program traditionally,” said Roddick. “It’s going to be a big challenge, but I know if we go out and do things right we can play them tough and have an opportunity to win.”
