NORMAN, Okla. - The No. 3-ranked Oklahoma men's gymnastics
team held its annual Red/White intrasquad scrimmage Saturday, where the Red
team defeated the White squad.
Captained by junior All-American Presten Ellsworth, the Red team scored a total
of 416.350 points and beat out the White team by just three points. Senior Troy
Nitzky was the captain of the White squad.
"Today was a very good start to the 2013 season," said head coach
Mark Williams. "It was a spirited intrasquad that we will learn a lot from.
There were some very good routines that were displayed, though we have a long
way to go in order for us to compete for the goals we have set for ourselves.
Going forward, I expect that to happen, but we certainly aren't satisfied with
the results of today. We look forward to our next opportunity, in a real competition
situation at the Rocky Mountain Open."
The scrimmage provided OU an opportunity to compete in front judges and fans
as it prepares for the final month of training before the start of the regular
season. Additionally, it gave the Sooners their first chance to compete under
the new format where the scores of all five competitors in each event count
towards the teams' final score.
"The team did what they were supposed to do today," Ellsworth said
of his Red squad. "Our goal was to go out there and hit the routines that
we do in practice, and for the most part, we did. There were a few mistakes,
and there is a lot of room for improvement, but we have plenty of time before
the start of the season. I'm very proud of the guys for going out there and
doing their job."
"We've been training for this the majority of the season, and it went like
most Red/White Scrimmages go," said Nitzky. "There was some good and
some bad, but what we can take from this is that we see what we need to fix
and what the five-up, five-count format means. We're just ready for the rest
of the season to arrive."
Dylan Akers, Will Clement, Mike Ried, Mike Squires, Chris Stehl, Raymond White
and Josh Yee joined Ellsworth on the Red squad. The White team was made up of
Danny Berardini, Todd Dowdy, Ethan Jose, Adam Myler, Kanji Oyama, Stanton Rehkemper,
Sergey Resnick, Alec Robin and Jacoby Rubin in addition to Nitzky, the captain.
The 2013 slate begins Jan. 12 at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs,
Colo. The home season opens on Feb. 16 with a meet against Minnesota. Conference-rival
Air Force comes to Norman the following weekend on Feb. 23, and the home season
closes on March 23 with a match against Ohio State. All three home competitions
are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. CT at McCasland Field House.
The season concludes with the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference
Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo., on April 4, and the 2013 NCAA Championships
in State College, Pa., April 19-21.
Season tickets are on sale now for purchase
online and by phone (800-456-GoOU). Single-meet tickets will go on sale
Jan. 10.
