Williams Signs Five to 2013 Class

Five men's gymnastics recruits to join Sooners for 2013-14 season.

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma head men's gymnastics coach Mark Williams announced the signing of five of the nation's top high school gymnasts to National Letters of Intent Wednesday. Allan Bower, Lee Grogan, Alex Powarzynski, Reese Rickett and Colin Van Wicklen will join the Sooners for the 2014 season.

"This is a tremendous recruiting class coming to Oklahoma," Williams said. "I'm excited about the athletic prowess, individual character and academic excellence these young men have displayed throughout their high school careers. They will be a great addition to an already strong team for 2014."
 

  Allan Bower


A Chandler, Ariz., native, Bower trains at Xtreem Gymnastics with coach Chris Sommer. He finished in seventh place in the all-around at the U.S. 2012 VISA Championships in the 16-18-year-old division. The U.S. Junior National Team member is a senior at Basha High School and his parents are David and Jane Bower.
 

  Lee Grogan

From Paragould, Ark., Grogan placed first in the all-around at the 2011 Region 3 Championships. At 2010 Regionals, he was first in the parallel bars and fifth place in the all-around in the 16-18-year-old division. He is coached by Darrin Grogan at the Champion Gymnastics Center. His parents are Bill and Sharon Grogan and he attends Grace Academy.
 
  Alex Powarzynski

Powarzynski comes to OU from Menifee, Calif., and Murrietra Mesa High School. He finished ninth in the all-around in the 16-18 year old division at the VISA Championships in addition to a second-place finish in the high bar and top-ten finishes in the parallel bars and vault. He finished seventh at the Region 1 Championships. He trains at the SCATS Gymnastics Club with coach Grigor Chailkyan. It is the same gym as current Sooner Kanji Oyama. His parents are Robert Powarzynski and Kimberly Skaurud.
 
  Reese Rickett

From Tomball, Texas, Rickett is a member of the Cypress Gymnastics Academy, the same gym as former Sooners and 2012 Olympic squad members Jonathan Horton and Chris Brooks. He is coached by Tom Meadows. He is a Region 3 team member, 2011 State and Region 3 champion on rings and is an Academic All-American. Rickett is a senior at Tomball High School and his parents are Mike and Sara Rickett.
 
  Colin Van Wicklen

Van Wicklen is a Magnolia, Texas, native and also trains at the Cypress Academy with Rickett and Coach Tom Meadows. He earned a ninth-place finish in the all-around of the 14-15 year old junior division at the National Championships and a third-place finish at the Region 3 Championships. He is a national champion in floor and vault and a two-time national team member. His parents are Eddie and Annie Van Wicklen and he attends Magnolia West High School.

Oklahoma opens the 2013 season Jan. 12 at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo.
