Stehl Named Conference Gymnast of the Week

Senior gymnast earns No. 3 OU's third MPSF honor of the season after upset win at No. 2 Michigan.

March 12, 2013

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma gymnast Chris Stehl was named the MPSF Gymnast of the Week Tuesday after his season-high tying 15.500 on still rings lead No. 3 OU to a 432.100-431.250 upset win at No. 2 Michigan.

OU’s come-from-behind upset road victory was fueled by the Sooner rings team. With Oklahoma down by 6.050 points after the third rotation, OU scored a 74.700 on the fourth event, which cut the deficit by three points, nearly in half. It was the first event title of the season for Stehl, who posted OU’s highest individual score of the night.

The Houston native is ranked ninth nationally on rings with a 15.433 three-score average and has helped the Sooners to a No. 4 team ranking in the event.

The senior earned his second career conference honor having also received the accolade in 2012. It is the third MPSF award of the year for the Sooners. Sophomore Jacoby Rubin and Alec Robin earned the weekly award on Jan. 29 and Feb. 5, respectively.

The third-ranked Sooners are off this weekend before they host No. 4 Ohio State on March 23 at the OU Field House. The top-four matchup marks the final regular season meet of the season before OU competes for its 20th conference title on April 6 and ninth national championship on April 19-21. Ticket information and a list of promotions for the meet vs. OSU at the Field House can be found here.
