NORMAN, Okla. -- Former OU gymnast and 2012 Olympian Jacob
Dalton won the 2013 AT&T American Cup Saturday with an all-around score
of 89.398 in Worcester, Mass.
Competing against eight of the best international gymnasts, Dalton won the floor,
rings, vault and high bar titles in addition to the all-around crown.
A letter winner at OU from 2010-12, Dalton's all-around score was over two points
higher than Ukraine's Oleg Verniaiev, who finished second. Dannell Leyva, the
only other U.S. gymnast selected to compete, finished sixth with an 85.265.
"It feels great to win the AT&T American Cup - it's good to get back into routine
mode and hit all my routines," Dalton said. "Start value and consistency are
my focus - I want to be the one to count on when I go out there and compete."
It was the first World Cup all-around title for Dalton, who has been a member
of the U.S. senior national team since 2009.
"Jake had a wonderful performance today," OU head coach Mark Williams
said. "Winning four events on the way to the all-around title is very impressive
when competing against the world's best. I'm very happy for Jake."
Dalton opened with a strong performance on floor, where his Arabian double layout
mount and triple full dismount resulted in a score of 15.700. His meet-high
score was the first of four event titles.
On pommel horse, Dalton scored a 13.333. He finished seventh on the event, but
quickly recovered with a 15.166 on rings and another event title. His routine
included a Maltese press to planche to Azarian iron cross and a double twisting
double tuck dismount.
Dalton's Kasamatsu double full on vault scored a 15.433, a high score on the
apparatus. After four rotations, Dalton had a 0.500 point lead heading into
the final two events.
A 15.033 on parallel bars was the second-highest score on the event, but it
was good enough for Dalton to maintain his all-around lead with one rotation
remaining.
Dalton finished off the competition on high bar, where he won his fourth event
title. His double twisting double layout dismount scored a 14.733 to seal the
victory.
The AT&T American Cup is part of the International Gymnastics Federation World
Cup series. It marks the unofficial beginning of the road to the 2016 Olympic
Games in Rio de Janeiro. The competition is the first of many international
events in the four years leading up to the Summer Games.
Dalton competed at the AT&T American Cup in 2011, where he finished third in
the all-around with a score of 88.497. Dalton came in first on floor with a
15.766 and tied for first on parallel bars with a 15.066. He was added to the
field on the morning of the competition due to an injury.
