NORMAN, Okla. -- Former OU gymnast and 2012 Olympian Jake
Dalton finished third in the all-around in the preliminary round of the 2013
Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev.
Dalton, a member of the OU men's gymnastics squad from 2010-12, finished with
an all-around score of 85.400, the third-highest score among the two preliminary
sessions. He came in first overall on two individual events, on the floor with
a 15.650 and on rings with a 14.650.
Alex Naddour, a gymnast at OU from 2010-11, competed on pommel horse and rings.
He scored a 13.900 and 14.500, respectively, and advanced to Saturday's finals
Allan Bower, Alex Powarzynski and Colin Van Wicklen, who have signed to join
OU in the fall of 2013, also competed but did not advance to the finals.
Dalton began the event on floor, where his Arabian double layout earned him
a 15.650, the highest score of the meet on any event.
On pommel horse, Dalton posted a 12.700, followed by his meet-high score on
rings. A 14.900 on vault was tied for third in the second prelim and tied for
8th overall.
Dalton closed on parallel bars and high bar, where he recorded a 14.200 and
13.300, respectively. Each score was in the top six among gymnasts in the second
prelim on the event.
Dalton will look to capture the Winter Cup all-around title again after winning
it in 2011. Last season, he competed on three events and finished fifth on rings
(29.250) and 12th on parallel bars (28.550) and high bar (28.100).
Bower competed on two events, and scored a 12.500 on rings and a 13.900 on vault.
Powarzynski finished 17th in his prelim with a 76.050 in the all-around. He
recorded a 12.450 on floor, a 11.500 on pommel horse, a 12.450 on rings, a 14.450
on vault, a 13.100 on parallel bars and a 12.100 on high bar.
Van Wicklen finished tied for 15th overall in his prelim with a 76.900 all-around
score. He posted a 13.650 on floor, a 12.100 on pommel horse, a 12.650 on rings,
a 14.150 on vault, a 12.900 on parallel bars and a 11.450 on high bar.
An Oklahoma gymnast has finished in the top-two at the Winter Cup each of the
past three years. In addition to Dalton in 2011, OU letterwinners Steven Legendre
(2008-11) finished second in 2012 and Chris Brooks (2006-2009) won the all-around
in 2010.
The top 42 gymnasts in the preliminary round advanced to Saturday's finals,
in addition to the top three gymnasts on each event. The all-around and individual
event champions will be determined by combining a gymnast's scores from the
two days of competition.
The Winter Cup Challenge helps determine the 15 gymnasts who will comprise the
U.S. Men's Senior National Team through the 2013 U.S. Gymnastics Championships
in Hartford, Conn., Aug. 15-18. The eight members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic squad,
including Dalton, Legendre and three other former Sooners, retain their spots
on the national team. The remaining seven spots will be taken from the top finishers
in certain criteria at the Winter Cup.
The Winter Cup finals will be held Feb. 9 at 9:15 p.m. CT at the Las Vegas Sports
Center.
