NORMAN, Okla. -- The 36th-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team climbed five spots to sixth place after carding a second-round 286 (-2) Saturday at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship in Macon, Ga.
The Sooners join second-place Virginia Tech, who also shot 2 under, as the only teams to card sub-par scores in the second round. Despite turning in the best round of the day, OU still trails first-place Georgia by 17 strokes at the par 72, 7,128-yard Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club.
"The boys did a good job," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "It was nice to see us finish the round off."
Beau Titsworth led the Sooners in the second round at the sixth-annual event. The freshman had big day, carding four birdies and a single bogey. Titsworth climbed 18 spots thanks to his second-round 69 (-3) and sits in a tie for sixth place, just four strokes behind leader Quinlan Prchal of Princeton.
Junior Michael Schoolcraft turned in a solid round for OU as well, carding five birdies and three bogeys on the day. The junior's 2-under performance in the second round moved him into a share of 10th place with 18 holes remaining.
Sophomore Michael Gellerman carded two bogeys in the second round, but added the Sooners' third eagle of the event on the par-5 No. 9 hole to finish his day with an even-par 72. Gellerman enters the final round in a share of 25th place.
"Gellerman hit a great shot for a tap-in eagle on the last hole, "Hybl said. "Titsworth and Schoolcraft both birdied the last hole as well."
Abraham Ancer carded two bogeys and a double bogey, but added a much-needed birdie on the 18th hole. The Sooner senior finished the day in a share of 69th place.
Freshman Eloy "Chito" Gonzalez carded a second-round 80 (+8) and remained in a tie for 78th place.
"I always love it when we shoot under par and are in position to make a good run tomorrow," Hybl said.
Oklahoma will be paired with Princeton and North Florida for Sunday’s third round and will tee off from the first hole at 8:20 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
