NORMAN, Okla. - The 36th-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team carded a first-round 11-over 299, good for 11th place at the 54-hole Brickyard Collegiate Championship in Macon, Ga.
No. 7 Georgia leads the 15-team event at 8 under par and holds a three-stoke lead over second-place North Florida. The Sooners trail Georgia by 19 strokes at the sixth-annual event, held at the par 72, 7,128-yard Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club.
Oklahoma fell behind early after struggling on the front nine, but finished strong over the round’s remaining holes.
Junior Michael Schoolcraft and freshman Beau Titsworth led OU in the first round with 1-over-par performances. They sit in a tie for 24th place out of 84 competitors.
Schoolcraft fought his way through a bogey on the first hole and a double bogey on No. 5, and finished the day with birdies on the 14th and 18th holes.
Titsworth had a much busier day at the Brickyard. Titsworth carded two bogeys, a double bogey, a birdie, as an eagle (on the par-4 No. 7 hole), all on the front nine. He added another bogey and birdie on the back side.
Michael Gellerman turned in a valuable third score for OU. The sophomore carded three bogeys and a birdie, good for a first-round 74 (+2) and a share of 34th place.
Senior Abraham Ancer and freshman Eloy “Chito” Gonzalez struggled to find their rhythm in the opening round. Ancer carded an eagle (also on hole No. 7) and two birdies while Gonzalez recorded a team-high five birdies, including four over the final seven holes. Unfortunately, the pair was haunted by a number of bogeys and double bogeys and each finished the round at 7 over par, good for 75th place.
“Hopefully we can have a better day tomorrow,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “Today was not our best effort.”
Oklahoma will be paired with Mercer and South Florida for Saturday’s second round and will tee off from the 10th hole at 7:40 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
