NORMAN, Okla. - The 22nd-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team is in seventh place after 36 holes at the 15-team Gopher Invitational in Wayzata, Minn. The Sooners fired a two-round 596 (+20) to open the season at the 7,020-yard, par-72 Spring Hill Golf Course.
Second-ranked California was the only team to finish under par at the eighth-annual event, carding a 12-under 564. The Golden Bears hold a 14-stroke lead over second-place SMU with one round remaining.
Oklahoma expected its experience to lead the team in the season opener, but it is a pair of freshmen who lead the team through 36 holes.
"Overall, not a very good day for us," fourth-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "Our upperclassmen struggled today, and we needed them to lead us."
Beau Titsworth looked as though his collegiate debut was going to be one to forget, carding five bogeys, a double bogey and just two birdies en route to an opening-round 77 (+5). However, the true freshman showed resilience in the second round, recording five birdies and an eagle (on the par-5 16th hole) against three bogeys. Titsworth played his final five holes of the day at 4-under and enters the third round in a tie for seventh place out of 77 competitors with a 1-over 145. He trails leader Max Homa of California by eight strokes.
Fellow freshman Eloy "Chito" Gonzalez was also solid in his debut, scoring par or better on 31 of his 36 holes. He shot a 1-over 73 in the first round and followed with a 4-over 76 in the second to stand in a tie for 22nd place (149 strokes). His opening round included three birdies.
"There were some bright moments from the freshmen, though, with Chito shooting our low round this morning and Beau playing a great round of golf this afternoon," Hybl said.
Abraham Ancer, who led the Sooners in scoring average the previous two seasons, struggled a good portion of the opening rounds of his senior campaign. The Mission, Texas, native bogeyed five holes in the first round before, like Titsworth, carding an eagle on No. 16. Ancer opened the second round with a birdie on the first hole, but added seven additionally bogeys. He ended the day on a positive note, carding back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 to help close the round. Ancer will enter Monday's final round in a tie for 31st place at 7 over (151).
Sophomore Michael Gellerman and junior Michael Schoolcraft rounded out the Sooners’ lineup. Each finished the first two rounds in a tie for 46th place at 9 over par.
"The golf course psyched some of our guys out at times," Hybl said. "We need to be better tomorrow."
Oklahoma will be paired with North Texas and Iowa in Monday’s final round, which begins at 8:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
