NORMAN, Okla. -- The 34th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team will travel to Laredo, Texas, to compete in the two-day, 54-hole Border Olympics this weekend, with two rounds scheduled for Friday, March 15, and the final round slated for Saturday, March 16. The tournament will be played at the Laredo Country Club, a 7,125-yard, par-72 course.
The Sooners are one of three squads in the 14-team field ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin top 50. The others are No. 31 Houston, which is hosting the tournament, and No. 39 Baylor. Other teams include Central Arkansas, Lamar, McNeese State, Northern Colorado, Rice, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State, UT Arlington, UTSA and Washington State.
"There will be some good teams, and I don't think it is one of those events where we can go down there and roll the ball out and feel like we are going to win," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "Our guys are going to have to play good golf, take care of the ball and hopefully shoot some under-par rounds. If we go play like we are supposed to, I think we will have a chance."
OU's lineup will be comprised of seniors Abraham Ancer and Will Kropp, junior Michael Schoolcraft and freshmen Beau Titsworth and Eloy Gonzalez. Junior Eduardo Castiello and sophomore Michael Gellerman will compete as individuals.
After struggling in a 15th-place finish at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters held in Las Vegas, Nev., last weekend, Hybl said the Sooners are looking to rebound.
"We want to redeem ourselves a little bit and see if we can go down and try to win a golf tournament and maybe regain some confidence," Hybl said.
