NORMAN, Okla. -- The 26th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the three-day, 54-hole Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, a prestigious tournament that features some of the nation's top squads. The event, hosted by UNLV, will be played March 8-10 (Friday-Sunday) at the Southern Highlands Golf Club, a 7,510-yard, par-72 course.
All 15 teams in the field are ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin top 50, and eight of the squads are in the top 10. The field includes the Sooners, No 1. California, No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Alabama, No. 5 New Mexico, No. 6 UCLA, No. 7 USC, No. 8 Duke, No. 10 Florida, No. 11 Georgia, No. 12 Georgia Tech, No. 13 Stanford, No. 16 Oklahoma State, No. 25 Texas A&M and No. 40 UNLV.
"The expectations for this week are again to go out and compete," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "I think our guys are in a good mental state right now to where, even though the competition is going to probably be the best I've ever seen, if we go do what we are supposed to do and play how we are capable of playing, then we will be in fine shape."
The Sooners are coming off a second-place showing at the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 19, finishing seven strokes behind Alabama. They won the 14-team UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational a week earlier.
OU's lineup features the same five golfers that competed in the team's first two spring tournaments: seniors Abraham Ancer and Will Kropp, juniors Michael Schoolcraft and Eduardo Castiello and freshman Beau Titsworth.
"The golf course is really tough. The greens are always really fast and firm, and the rough is usually tough, so I am looking forward to seeing how the guys react this week," Hybl said.
Each round will begin at 10 a.m. CT with tee times off the No. 1 and No. 10 holes. Live scoring for the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters will be available at GolfStat.com.
