NORMAN, Okla. -- The 42nd-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team (-19) sits in a tie for first place with fifth-ranked Alabama after two rounds of competition at the Puerto Rico Classic. The 54-hole tournament is being played at the 6,092-yard, par-72 Rio Mar Country Club's River Course in Rio Grande, P.R.
The Sooners began the day one stroke off the lead and followed their first-round 280 (-8) with a second-round 277 (-11) Monday, a season-best single-round score. OU and Alabama are at -19, eight shots in front of third-place SMU.
The Puerto Rico Classic features a competitive 15-team field that includes eight squads ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin top 50, including the Sooners.
"It was another great day for us," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We showed the type of firepower today that I have been waiting to see. We will go with the same game plan tomorrow, and that is to be aggressive and make as many birdies as we can. Alabama and other teams behind us have great players, and we need to stay aggressive."
After firing a second-round 69 (-3), junior Eduardo Castiello (-7) sits tied atop the leaderboard with Virginia Tech's Mikey Moyers, one stroke ahead of second place. Castiello carded second-round birdies on holes 2, 4, 10, 15 and 17.
Seniors Abraham Ancer and Will Kropp are tied for ninth place with a two-round 141 (-3). Ancer shot 2 under par in the second round and recorded five birdies. After starting the day in a tie for 28th, Kropp posted a second-round 68 (-4), his season-best score.
Junior Michael Schoolcraft and freshman Beau Titsworth share 22nd place after finishing the first two rounds at even par. Schoolcraft recorded a second-round 70 (-2) while Titsworth carded a 76 (+4) after starting the day at 4 under par.
"All of our guys who shot under par played great today," Hybl said. "And it was nice to see Michael Schoolcraft get under par today as well, which helped us be that much better."
Tuesday's final round of the Puerto Rico Classic will begin at 5:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.
