NORMAN, Okla. -- The 42nd-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team completed the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic at 8 under par and sits in second place, one stroke behind fifth-ranked Alabama. The 54-hole tournament is being played at the 6,092-yard, par-72 Rio Mar Country Club's River Course in Rio Grande, P.R.
OU's first-round 280, a season-best score for a par-72 course, came against a competitive 15-team field that features eight squads ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin top 50, including the Sooners.
"We had a great team round today, and it was really fun to watch all of our guys compete and have fun," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We put ourselves in a good spot, and we need to go follow up a great round today with another great round tomorrow."
Junior Eduardo Castiello and freshman Beau Titsworth completed the day in a three-way tie for second place with a first-round 68 (-4) and are one stroke out of the lead. Castiello and Titsworth each tied their season-low scores, and each carded four birdies on the day.
"Eduardo and Beau played bogey-free rounds, and that is about as good as it gets for a golfer," Hybl said.
Senior Abraham Ancer finished with a 1-under-par first round, recording birdies on six holes to counteract five bogeys, and is tied for 15th place. Senior Will Kropp carded a 73 (+1) and junior Michael Schoolcraft concluded the first day at 2 over par.
Monday's second round of the tournament is slated to begin at 6 a.m. CT. Live scorning will be available at GolfStat.com.
