NORMAN, Okla. -- The 45th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team sits in second place out of 14 teams following two rounds of competition Monday at the UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio, Texas. The Sooners carded a two-round 574 (+6) at the 6,765-yard, par-71 Oak Hills Country Club, just three strokes off of tournament leader No. 38 North Texas.
"Overall, I thought we had a good day," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "For the first day of the spring season, I thought the boys fought hard. It was a pretty tough day weather wise as it was kind of breezy and cold all day long. We threw away a couple of shots coming down the stretch, but we shot well."
Seniors Will Kropp and Abraham Ancer, as well as junior Michael Schoolcraft, finished the first 36 holds inside the top 10 for the Sooners.
"Will Kropp showed some really good signs today of what can hopefully happen this spring for us," Hybl said. "I think all of our guys did a good job for us."
Kropp shot par in both rounds and is tied for fifth place with Iowa State's Scott Fernandez. Kropp is four strokes behind tournament leaders Ryan Werre of host UTSA and Rodolfo Cazaubon of North Texas, both scoring a 138 (-4). Between the two rounds, Kropp recorded eight birdies on the day, counteracting six bogeys and one double bogey.
Just one stroke behind Kropp, Ancer and Schoolcraft are tied for seventh place after both scoring a 143 (+1).
Junior Eduardo Castiello sits tied for 26th place after carding a two-round 147 (+5). Castiello recovered from a first-round +5 by shooting par in the second round. Freshman Beau Titsworth (+6) struggled early in the first, recording two bogies (holes 8 and 9) and two double bogies (holes 7 and 11) in his first six holes before firing three birdies on holes 14, 15 and 17. He is tied for 34th place.
Competing as individuals, sophomore Michael Gellerman (+4) finished tied for 18th place, and freshman Eloy Gonzalez shot a 151 (+9), placing him in a tie for 47th.
The tournament's final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.
