NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma men’s golf team carded a final-round 311 Wednesday to finish the Big 12 Championship in sixth place at the 6,593-yard, par-70 Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. The Sooners entered the final round in fifth place, but slipped one spot after a 31-over-par performance as poor weather conditions affected the field.
Oklahoma State claimed its fifth consecutive Big 12 title, fending off second-place Texas A&M by 13 shots. OSU’s Morgan Hoffman claimed medalist honors, carding an even-par 280 over the tournament’s four rounds.
“I’m disappointed in the way we finished, and I know the boys are too,” said OU head coach Ryan Hybl. “Hopefully we can learn from this experience because it was not much fun. We definitely need to go back to the drawing board because we had no firepower in the final round. It’s definitely disappointing.”
The 24th-ranked Sooners were led by senior Ryan Sirman, who tied for 11th place in the event with a 10-over 290. Sirman began the week with an impressive 66, which tied for the lowest round of the tournament. He followed with rounds of 74, 73 and 77.
Junior Riley Pumphrey and sophomore Abraham Ancer also notched top-20 finishes. Pumphrey’s final-round 76 put him at 292 (+12) for the tournament and in a tie for 14th place. Ancer carded a 79 Wednesday and tied for 20th with a total score of 295 (+15).
Freshman Eduardo Castiello posted a fourth-round 80 and tied for 48th place at 308. Fellow freshman Michael Schoolcraft’s 79 brought his four-round total to 310, good for a 50th-place tie.
Next up for the Sooners will be NCAA Regional competition May 19-21. Participants for the NCAA tournament will be selected Monday, May 9, at 6 p.m. Eastern time.
