NORMAN, Okla. – Although a win was out of reach, the 33rd-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team entered the final round of the Puerto Rico Classic looking to accomplish a feat not done by the Sooners in six years.
OU’s final-round 289 (+1) in San Juan, P.R., resulted in a three-round 867 (+3) and sixth-place tie, but it also meant the Sooners finished ahead of rival Oklahoma State for the first time since the 2006 Big 12 Championship.
No. 9 Alabama won the event in commanding fashion, carding a three-round 834 (-30) at the 12th-annual event. The Crimson Tide finished 18 strokes ahead of second-place Clemson. Alabama’s Justin Thomas claimed medalist honors with a 10-under par performance.
From the Big 12, top-ranked Texas joined the Sooners in a tie for sixth, and Oklahoma State finished in 10th place. It was the first time since the 2006 that the Sooners finished higher than their Bedlam rival.
“Overall, we played pretty good this week and I am pleased,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “We beat some really good teams. The best thing is that our guys know we did not play up to the level we should, so that continues to be a good sign for us.”
After recording identical scores in each of the first two rounds, senior Riley Pumphrey and junior Will Kropp did it again in the third, each carding a final-round 74 (+2). Pumphrey birdied each of the course’s par-5 holes (No. 4, 8, 11 and 15), but added four bogeys and a double-bogey. With the exception of a triple-bogey on No. 6, Kropp had a relatively smooth final round, notching three birdies and two bogeys. At 1 over par, the duo finished in a tie for 23rd place.
Michael Gellerman had a solid day at the Rio Mar Country Club’s River Course, firing a third-round 72 (E) with three birdies and three bogeys. The true freshman finished the event with a three-round 220 (+4) and in a tie for 33rd place.
After finishing at par in each of the first two rounds, Abraham Ancer carded a final-round 76 (+4). The junior pocketed four birdies, but also recorded two bogeys and three double-bogeys. Ancer also finished the event in a tie for 33rd place.
After struggling in the first two rounds, Ben Klaus kept the Sooners in the mix of things in the final round. The senior registered five birdies, four of them coming between holes 11 and 15. Klaus’ three-round 229 (+13) placed him in 61st place among the 73 competitors.
“Klaus was huge for us today, and I was happy for him,” said Hybl.
The Sooners will be back in action March 23 at the two-day Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga.
“It’s time to go back to the drawing board and see how we can improve after this week, since we have some good time before our next event,” Hybl said.
