On a clear night in mid October, the No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners (4-0-1) appeared for the first time on ESPN in a heated battle with the unranked Iowa State Cyclones. Oklahoma, coming off a 15-15 tie against Texas the previous week, trailed the entire game until the 3:34 mark in the fourth quarter when Spencer Tillman scored a touchdown on a three-yard run to put the Sooners ahead 12-10 to seal the game.
"Emotionally, we weren't exactly fired up for the game because we felt like we lost to Texas the week before," said kicker Tim Lashar. "It was a football game we thought we would go in and win."
Oklahoma struck first with a 36-yard field goal by Lashar. ISU answered back in the second quarter with a touchdown and a field goal, bringing the score to 7-3. Both teams failed to score in the third quarter while the fourth quarter brought the game down to the wire. ISU kicked a field goal to make the score 10-3. OU settled for a 30-yard Lashar field goal with 9:46 remaining in the contest to cut the deficit to 10-6. At the 3:34 mark, Tillman carried the ball three yards into the opponents' end zone. The Cyclones were never able to pull ahead and the Sooners were victorious.
"We got surprised a little bit, and the Iowa State fans were hostile," Lasher added. "It was a sold out crowd, and ISU had just gotten a new scoreboard. It was an exciting game."
