FOX Sports Net Acquires Pay-Per-View Rights To Two OU Football Games

Aug. 24, 2000

NORMAN, Okla. - Big 12 Special Order Sports, a division of FOX Sports Net, today acquired the pay-per-view rights to two University of Oklahoma home football games. The network will distribute OU's Sept. 2 game against UTEP and the Sooners' Sept. 9 contest against Arkansas State on a pay-per-view basis to cable systems in the states of the participating schools. Kickoff for both games from Memorial Stadium is 6:30 p.m. CDT. Suggested retail price for each game is $24.95.

FOX Sports Net acquired the pay-per-view rights to the games when they were not selected for over-the-air broadcast, syndication or cable television distribution. Under conference TV rules, games not picked up for broadcast, syndication or cable telecasts can only be televised on a pay-per-view basis in the participating teams' home states. Games are also available via C-Band satellite to commercial establishments and OU alumni groups outside Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas by contacting COX Sports (1-888-777-1166). The cost for a group not in the participating teams' states is $175.00. The games will not be available through DirectTV.

"We're giving fans an option to watch games that they otherwise wouldn't be able to see in person or on television at an affordable price," said FOX Sports Net Senior Vice President/General Manager Jon Heidtke, noting that the UTEP game is sold out and the Arkansas State game also figures to be a sellout. "The Sooners are back to national prominence and we want to give as many Sooners fans as possible an opportunity to watch their team."

Participating cable systems will offer the telecasts to their customers on a designated pay-per-view channel. The telecasts will not pre-empt FOX Sports Net's regularly scheduled programming. FOX Sports Net will televise both games on tape-delay at 3:00 AM CDT the following day.

"FOX Sports and their cable operators approached us about the opportunity to televise the games," said Bruce Van De Velde, OU senior associate athletic director. "With the overwhelming interest and demand that we have seen demonstrated across the state, we see this venture as a great way to bring OU football to the fans who were not able to purchase tickets."
