Sooners ranked in 51st of 59 preseason Associated Press polls.
NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma will enter the 2009 season ranked No. 3 in the Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll released Saturday. OU was one of five Big 12 Conference teams ranked in the initial poll (No. 2 Texas, No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 24 Nebraska, No. 25 Kansas).
The 2009 season marks the 51st preseason ranking for the Sooners in the 59 years the AP has released a preseason poll (86%). It also marks the highest preseason ranking for OU since 2004 when the Sooners debuted at No. 2.
Oklahoma holds AP records for most weeks ranked No. 1 (97), most weeks ranked in Top 2 (194), most weeks ranked in Top 5 (370) and most weeks ranked in Top 10 (507).
OU opens the 2009 season against No. 20 BYU in Arlington, Texas, at the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium on Saturday, Sept. 5. ESPN will televise the game to the nation with kickoff slated for 6 p.m. Central.
Currently, five of OU's 2009 opponents are ranked including No. 2 Texas, No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 20 BYU, No 24 Nebraska and No. 25 Kansas. Texas Tech and Miami also received votes.
