NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma defensive end R.J. Washington was named to the 2012 Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award preseason watch list by the Ted Hendricks Foundation on Monday.

Washington owns 23 tackles, 5.5 sacks and five pass breakups for his career. The Fort Worth, Texas, native earned playing time in all 13 games for Oklahoma in 2012 while playing behind All-Big 12 ends Frank Alexander and Ronnell Lewis, both of whom are now on NFL rosters. Alexander was a finalist for the Hendricks Award last season.

Washington is coming off a two-sack, three-tackle performance against Iowa in last season's Insight Bowl and was named to the Athlon Preseason All-Big 12 Second Team.

The Ted Hendricks Award Watch List includes 40 of the top defensive ends in the nation, including six players from the Big 12, heading into the 2012 season. The winner will be announced on Dec. 5.

On-field performance, exceptional winning attitude, leadership abilities, contributions to school and community and academic preparedness are some of the criteria used to determine the Award's winner. Members of the national media, head coaches, professional scouts and former winners are included in the Award's voting committee. Candidates may represent any class as well as any four-year NCAA accredited school. The candidate's primary position must be defensive end.

Now in its eleventh season, the Ted Hendricks Award is named in honor of college football's first three-time first-team All-American. After playing defensive end at the University of Miami, Hendricks' professional career spanned 15 years and 215 consecutive games. It included four Super Bowl victories, eight Pro Bowl selections and inductions into the both the College Football and Pro Football Hall of Fame.
