Sooners hold 81-play scrimmage Saturday at Owen Field.
NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma completed its first major
scrimmage of the spring with an 81-play workout Saturday
at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Sooner
head coach Bob Stoops noted that several standouts
did not participate, but still liked the overall effort.
"It went well," he said. "We'll
grade the tape and see how it looked. We've got a lot
of guys out so we didn't real true look, but a lot
of young guys are getting good work."
Several projected starters did not participate in
the scrimmage while recovering from injuries. Among
those were running back linebacker Austin Box, Chris Brown, defensive end
Auston English, safety Nic Harris, receiver Manuel
Johnson, linebacker Ryan Reynolds, offensive guard
Duke Robinson and defensive end John Williams.
Box is among the latest to join that list. He
has a sprained elbow and will likely miss the remainder
of the spring drills.
The coach gave a good appraisal of his secondary,
including redshirt freshmen Desmond Jackson, who had
a team-high seven tackles, and Sam Proctor.
"Desmond showed up a lot," Stoops said. "I
thought he looked real good. It was encouraging to
see Sam Proctor make a lot of tackles. Brian Jackson
and Dominque Franks were solid."
It was tough-sledding for the offense for much of
the day with 294 total yards and no touchdowns, but
Stoops laid most of that on practice repetition.
"We go so much against each other. Our defense
sees them everyday. They should stop them. If we're
going to be any good at all, (the offense) should have
a hard time moving it."
Keenan Clayton's move to linebacker seemed to be
going well as he had six tackles.
"Keenan's doing a nice job," said Stoops. "He
still has a ways to go, but he's shown some great signs.
He's an athletic, solid player and he's starting to
show that."
Quarterback Sam Bradford completed 8-of-16 passes
for 104 yards with no interceptions. The defense made
three interceptions on the day, two on balls that were
tipped at the line of scrimmage.
The top ground gainer was true freshman Justin Johnson,
who logged 17 rushes for 57 yards.
OU's next public scrimmage will take place April
5 at 1 p.m., at the stadium. Tickets are also on sale
for the April 12 Red/White Spring Game, which is also
slated to begin at 1 p.m.
