NORMAN, Okla. -
Perennial college football powerhouses Oklahoma and Ohio State will begin a two-game series in 2016. That announcement came today when OU also announced the completion of its 2008 schedule.
Tennessee-Chattanooga is the opponent for the final open date that was remaining on the slate for the upcoming season.
The Ohio State games will rekindle a series that has been dormant since 1983 when the Buckeyes notched a 24-14 win in Norman. The only other meeting was in 1977, when Uwe von Schamann's 41-yard field goal with two seconds remaining hoisted the Sooners to a 29-28 victory at Columbus.
In the previous matchups both Oklahoma and Ohio
State brought top-10 rankings into the game. The first
game of the new series will take place Sept. 17, 2016
in Norman. It will be followed by a Sept. 16, 2017
game at Columbus.
"This series will bring together two of the most celebrated programs in the history of college football," said OU Vice President for Sports Programs and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Joe Castiglione. "Oklahoma has demonstrated that it is committed to scheduling games of this kind that mean so much to college football on a national scale. We hope to continue that approach well into our future."
In recent years, OU has also played regular season contests against Alabama, UCLA, Miami, Oregon, Washington and Notre Dame. Future
schedules will include Florida State, Tennessee, Washington, Miami, Notre Dame and LSU.
When UT-Chattanooga, a Football Championship Subdivision member, visits on Aug. 30, it will bring back to Norman former associate athletics director Rick Hart, now the athletics director at UTC.
"We look forward to hosting the Tennessee-Chattanooga program," Castiglione said. "We appreciate the way they worked with us to complete our 2008 schedule."
"For a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the addition of the 12th game, scheduling is more difficult now than it has been at any other time during my career. We would have preferred to have had the schedule finalized earlier, but the process is challenging. For this year and next we have been in a position of filling dates that were previously filled by other institutions, who later moved their schedules in other directions."

OU will open against UTC then host Cincinnati on Sept. 6. The Sooners play their first road game on Sept. 13 at Washington then close out the non-conference portion of their season with a Sept. 27 home game against TCU.
The Big 12 schedule begins Oct. 4 at Baylor before the Oct. 11 clash with Texas at Dallas. The Sooners host Kansas on Oct. 18 before traveling to Kansas State on Oct. 25. Nebraska visits on Nov. 1, before OU travels to Texas A&M on Nov. 8.
On Nov. 15, Oklahoma hosts Texas Tech before closing out the regular season at Oklahoma State on Nov. 29.
"Once again, we feel we have the kind of schedule strength that will serve our program well," Castiglione said.
Of the 11 Football Bowl Subdivision team on the schedule, seven played in bowls in the recently completed season, seven posted winning records and three won at least 10 games. The 11 FBS opponents combined for a record of 80-60.
The Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship Game will be played Dec. 6 at Kansas City.
