Coaching Accomplishments
Was a finalist for the 2001 AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year Award.
His 2001 defense was dominant. The Sooners ranked No. 4 nationally in scoring defense, No. 4 in total defense, No. 5 in pass efficiency defense, No. 7 in rushing defense and No. 11 in passing defense.
OU also ranked No. 6 nationally in turnovers gained and had totaled 33 takeaways in each of the last two seasons.
Two of the five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award, Rocky Calmus and Roy Williams, played on the OU defense as did a total of seven players who earned All-Big 12 recognition.
Three Sooner opponents -- Texas Tech (9), Arkansas (6) and Texas A&M (5) -- fell shy of 10 first downs.
In 1997, Kansas State's defense stood fourth and fifth in the nation in total defense and pass efficiency defense, respectively.
With Stoops at the helm, KSU was one of only four schools to rank among the Top 10 nationally for every major defensive category in 1998.
Played with the NFL's Chicago Bears and the Arena Football League's Pittsburgh Gladiators.
