Sooner Scrapbook: 1949 Sugar Bowl

SoonerSports.com  1949 Sugar Bowl

Nothing takes a viewer back in time quite like old video clips. A vintage photograph captures a moment in time but only video can truly immerse the viewer in the aura of the past. Join us as we travel back to witness the Sooners in action in these classic video clips from YouTube.

In 1948, Oklahoma compiled a 10-1 record in Bud Wilkinson's second season at the helm in Norman. OU accepted an invitation to play in the 15th Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on New Year's Day against Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice and the No. 3 North Carolina Tar Heels.

The Sooners would shut down UNC's single wing attack and score a 14-6 upset before a record crowd of 80,383. Wilkinson was carried off the field on the shoulders of his players. You'll hear references to OU quarterback "General" Jack Mitchell, Darrell Royal, Leon Heath, Jim Owens, Myrle Greathouse and Paul "Buddy" Burris (who would be named All-America for the third straight year).

Although the videos are dark, click the icon in the bottom right of each clip to view in full-screen mode. The announcer does his best to make you feel like you're there in the Sugar Bowl stands watching the Sooners battle the Tar Heels. View game stats here courtesy the Sugar Bowl and an airline ticket from Sooner fan Robert McGill.
