OU's M'Baye, Neal Named Academic All-Big 12

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma men's basketball players Amath M'Baye and Tyler Neal were each named to the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Team on Thursday, the conference office announced.

Both M'Baye and Neal were selected to the 15-person first team, which includes student-athletes who have recorded a 3.20 or better GPA. Seven Big 12 men's basketball players were named to the second team (3.00 to 3.19 GPA).

M'Baye, an international studies major who hails from Bordeaux, France, is OU's third-leading scorer and second-leading rebounder this season. The junior forward has started all 23 games and averages 10.5 points and 5.5 boards in 24.6 minutes per contest. He ranks 10th in the Big 12 with his .485 field goal percentage.

Neal, also a junior forward, is majoring in sociology and was honored for the second straight year (he was a second-team selection last season). The Oklahoma City native has played in 20 games this season and is averaging 1.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in 7.9 minutes per contest. He is coming off an eight-point performance against TCU on Monday, his highest scoring output in Big 12 play this season.

To qualify for the all-academic team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (either cumulative or over the two previous semesters) and have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The Sooners, who are 16-7 overall and 7-4 in Big 12 play, are just one game out of first place in the conference race. They play at Oklahoma State on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CT in a game that will be televised by the Big 12 Network.
