HEAD COACH JEFF CAPEL
On the game:
"I thought we showed some guts and determination. Our offense got better in the second half and then we got some stops. It was a good win for us."
More on the game:
"We feel very fortunate to get a win tonight. We beat a very good basketball team. They are very well coached and their guys play hard. I thought we did a great job defensively all game, but we did a better job offensively in the second half and that is how we pulled away. Give Gardner-Webb a lot of credit. They are going to win a lot of games this year."
On freshman Blake Griffin:
"He has a bright future. All of this stuff is good for him. This is going to help him progress. We think he is going to be really, really good by the time we get to conference play and he is already good now."
More on Griffin:
"People make a big deal. I thought Blake did some good things yesterday. He was playing against a senior and probably the best or one of the best post defenders in the country in (Memphis' Joey) Dorsey. He won't see another guy like him unless it's in the (NCAA) Tournament. Hopefully we get another shot at Memphis. He was better today. He scored the ball better for us today."
On his rotation:
"I just tried to find the right mix and combination. I am trying to figure it out. I hope our guys are not that concerned about starting. You shouldn't play this game to start. You should play this game to be a part of the team. Everyone has an important role, so we don't get caught up in who is starting."
