NORMAN, Okla. -- Home runs by Hector Lorenzana and Jack Mayfield helped power the Red Team to a 6-2 win and a fall series victory over the White Team Sunday in Game 3 of the University of Oklahoma baseball program's annual Red/White Series at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
"I can't say enough about the Red Team and how they defended the ball throughout the series," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. "The White Team was plagued by the errors, and it came back to haunt them."
Although the Red Team clinched for the fifth year in a row, the fall series will continue as scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday with Games 4 and 5. Both contests will begin at 2:30 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
"I think it'll be good for us to keep getting more experience," said Golloway of playing out the entire series. "I think we can utilize it like you would in a situation in the Big 12 where you've won the weekend series but still have to come out and play well in that Sunday game and find a way to win. We can utilize that as a lesson for our newcomers. Let's see who's going to come out and play hard to despite the fact that we already know the outcome of the series."
The White Team jumped out to the early lead in the top of the first inning when Hunter Haley, who went 4-for-4, led off with a single to center and scored on a two-out double to left center to make it 1-0.
The White Team's advantage was erased by the Red Team in the bottom of the third when Dylan Raper cracked a leadoff two bagger to left and scored on a double to right by Craig Aikin to even things up.
The Red Team tacked on two more in the following frame. Anthony Hermelyn smacked a leadoff single to right and scored on a double down the left field line by Dillon Yeaman, then Garrett Carey reached on an infield base hit and scored on a singe to right center by Dilon Argo.
The gap closed to one run in the top of the fifth when the White Team got a run back, but Lorenzana made it a two-run contest again with his solo shot over the left field wall in the home half to make it 4-2.
The Red Team tacked on two more insurance scores in the seventh. Mac James got things started with a leadoff double to right, setting the stage for Mayfield's two-run blast. Mayfield leads the Red Team through three fall contests with a .455 batting average, five hits and three RBIs.
Kyle Hayes struck out two over four innings to earn the mound triumph for the Red Team.
