NORMAN, Okla. -- Ethan Carnes posted four scoreless innings on the hill, and Craig Aikin went 2-for-4 with an RBI to help the Red Team take a 2-0 lead in the University of Oklahoma's annual Red/White Series courtesy of a 4-1 triumph over the White Team Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
"I thought both Ethan Carnes and White Team starting pitcher Billy Waltrip were outstanding and really efficient," said head coach Sunny Golloway. "A lot of ground balls from both those guys. The three errors hurt the White Team. Jack Mayfield and Jonathan Gray are both doing a really good job of leading the Red Team. I'm impressed with the way Craig Aikin has been playing. He's been doing some special things as a freshman."
Carnes fanned two over four frames of starting work for the Red Team and received run support in the third inning when Dilon Argo coaxed a leadoff walk and scored one out later on an RBI base hit to right by Aikin.
"Aikin's trying to bunt the ball and do some things as a table setter, but he can also turn and drive the ball for us," said Golloway. "He's got good bat speed. Defensively, he can flat go get it in center field."
The Red Team added three more runs to its advantage in the sixth. Hector Lorenzana reached on a fielding error, and Mayfield and Anthony Hermelyn followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Jake Smith cashed in with a two-RBI single to left that plated both Lorenzana and Mayfield, and Hermelyn and Smith were both able to move up 90 feet on an error on the play. That set Dillon Yeaman up for a sacrifice fly that allowed Hermelyn to tag up and score from third.
The White Team put together a comeback bid in the bottom of the seventh when Justin Burba drew a two-out walk, Hunter Haley reached on an infield single and Dusty Dishman was hit by a pitch. Hunter Lockwood coaxed a bases-loaded walk to bump home Burba, but Hermelyn, a right hander who moved from first base to the mound at the start of the frame, tallied a strikeout to end the contest.
The Red Team takes aim at the fall series sweep Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The contests in the best-of-five set are free and open to the public. The remainder of the schedule for the series is as follows. All dates and times are subject to change:
