NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma left-handed pitcher Dillon Overton was named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team on Wednesday, as selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

Overton was the only starting pitcher from the Big 12 Conference on the list and he was joined by five other freshmen in the conference.

The Weatherford, Okla., native's selection marks the third straight year that a Sooner was named to a freshman All-American team. Max White was selected in 2010 and Garrett Buechele in 2009.

Overton is the ninth freshman All-American at Oklahoma (fourth pitcher) and the fifth under head coach Sunny Golloway.

In 2011, Overton was tied for the team lead in appearances with 23, including 18 with one run allowed or less (12 shutouts) and was named 2011 All-Big 12 honorable mention and to the All-Big 12 freshman team. Overton finished fifth in the Big 12 with a 2.30 ERA and sixth with eight wins.

He made an immediate impact and appeared in the starting rotation during the opening weekend of the season. In his first career start versus William and Mary on Feb. 20, Overton lasted seven innings and gave up just one run on four hits.

On May 2, he was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after recording a pair of wins over two top 10 opponents on the road against then-No. 7 TCU and then-No. 4 Texas.

The left-handed hurler was also impressive out of the bullpen where he made 16 relief appearances and posted a 1.09 ERA.
