NORMAN, Okla. -- The NCAA announced Sunday that the University of Oklahoma was selected as one of 16 sites for next week's NCAA Regional. The 2009 Norman Regional, a double-elimination format, begins on Friday, May 29, with two opening round games and runs through Monday, June 1 at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Sooners will be making the program's 32nd appearance in the NCAA Tournament and fourth under head coach Sunny Golloway.
“The coaching staff, the administration, and all of the support staff that works with these student athletes in the University of Oklahoma baseball program, are extremely proud of these young men and the body of work they have put together this season," said Golloway. "They competed hard every day to win 40 regular season games and finish second in a very tough Big 12 Conference. Now we are being rewarded with a host regional and we are excited for our fans to see us perform in a NCAA setting, especially after the great turnouts we saw the last time we hosted in 2006 at L. Dale Mitchell Park.”
This season marks the second time in the last four years that the Sooners' home has been chosen to host an NCAA Regional in Norman. In 2006, the Sooners won the Norman Regional en route to the program's first Super Regional appearance.
“There was never a doubt in my mind, as a head coach, that our administration would put forth a great effort to help us secure a regional bid," added Gollloway. "After 18 years, I fully understand how important that support is. I know through experience, that you have to earn it on the field and have the support behind you to achieve a goal like this. Together, we look forward to hosting a great regional and continuing to play well on our road to Omaha.”
Oklahoma also hosted regionals in Norman in 1975 and 1977 before L. Dale Mitchell Park opened in 1982. On three different occasions, the Sooners have hosted a regional in Oklahoma City at the Bricktown Ballpark (1995, 2000 and 2004).
The No. 8 Sooners (41-18) finished the 2009 regular season with a 24-4 mark at L. Dale Mitchell Park. In the three prior NCAA Regional appearances in Norman, OU owns a combined 9-4 record with a trip to the 1975 College World Series and a 2006 Super Regional appearance. Overall, the Sooners are 16-8 when hosting an NCAA Regional.
Along with Oklahoma, Texas is the other host school from the Big 12 Conference.
The remaining 14 regional hosts include: Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Florida, LSU, Mississippi, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, East Carolina, Rice, Louisville, TCU and Arizona State.
