May 22, 2012
NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 25 Oklahoma (35-21, 13-10 Big 12) opens the 2012
Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship vs. No. 5 Oklahoma State (32-23, 13-11) at 9 a.m. on Wednesday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. The Sooners are 1-3 this year against the Cowboys and will be looking for some revenge as the two teams kick off the 2012 conference tournament.
Below are five things to watch this week as the Sooners look to win their first Big 12 title since 1997.
1. Big 12 Openers
The Sooners need to get off to a good start and stay in the winners' bracket. Prior to the 2011 to Kansas State in the first round, OU had won four straight tournament openers and is 7-8 all-time in the first game played. The last time OU opened with OSU was in 2002 (Sooners won 11-3).
2. Overton Gets Another Shot at OSU
The Weatherford, Okla., native is making his fifth appearance against Oklahoma State Wednesday and third start. He lost on May 6 to the Cowboys in Bricktown in just 2 2/3 innings. He has 16 career strikeouts against OSU in 13 innings pitched with a 1-0 record and a 3.46 earned run average.
3. Bedlam History in the Tournament
OU is 25-25 in the Big 12 Championship and 9-8 under head coach Sunny Golloway. OSU is 13-25 all-time in the Big 12 Championship and 8-11 under Frank Anderson. Both the Sooners (1997) and the Cowboys (2004) have each won the Big 12 title. The Sooners and Cowboys have also faced off seven times in the Big 12 tourney, with OU winning each of those matchups, including the last in 2007 (9-8).
4. Next Up
The winner of Wednesday’s game will play the winner of the No. 1 Baylor and No. 8 Kansas State game at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The losers of the two games will meet at 9 a.m. on Thursday. The Sooners fared well in the regular season against both the Bears and Wildcats. OU swept KSU at home on March 30-April 1 and finished off the Big 12 slate with a sweep of then-No. 2 Baylor in Norman.
