NORMAN, Okla. -- Freshman Hunter Lockwood claimed a share of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week honor and earned the Newcomer of the Week award outright to highlight this week’s edition of Big 12 baseball weekly awards.
He shared the Player of the Week accolade with Jake Miller (Baylor), while Duke von Schamann (Texas Tech) was named the Pitcher of the Week. Awards are determined through games played March 26-April 1.
Lockwood hit safely in all four games last week to continue his season high eight-game hitting streak. He batted .429 (6-for-14) with two homers, eight RBI, a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage as OU won three of its four games, including a series victory over Kansas State. Lockwood also posted a 1.000 fielding percentage with 34 putouts and four assists at first base.
The true freshman had two multi-hit games and two multi-RBI games, including a career-high five runs driven in during Saturday’s game against Kansas State. In addition to his two home runs, Lockwood also had two doubles, two walks and a stolen base in four starts last week.
Lockwood leads the Big 12 with eight homers and a .632 slugging percentage. He also ranks fourth in the league with 28 RBI and 59 total bases. Lockwood is hitting .301 in his 25 games started and leads OU with eight multi-RBI games and ranks second with nine multi-hit games.
Lockwood is the third Sooner to collect Big 12 weekly honors this season. Jordan John (March 5) and Dillon Overton (March 12) were named the league's top hurlers while Jonathan Gray collected top newcomer honors on March 12.
OU travels to No. 6 Texas A&M for a three-game set over Easter weekend. The Sooners and Aggies will play the series on Thursday (6:35 p.m.), Friday (6:35 p.m.) and Saturday (3:30 p.m.). All three games will be carried on the Sooner Sports Network KREF 1400 AM while Saturday’s finale will be televised on ESPNU.
