NORMAN, Okla. -- Redshirt sophomore reliever Jordan John was named the Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 5 after tossing 5 1/3 scoreless innings in two games at New Mexico over the weekend. John allowed one hit in the two appearances, combined for a shutout and held opponents to a .059 batting average.
He shared the honor with Texas A&M’s Ross Stripling while Texas’ Jonathan Walsh and Brooks Marlow were named the player and newcomer of the week, respectively.
It marks the second career honor for John who was named the conference newcomer of the week on Feb. 28, 2011.
On Friday at New Mexico, John pitched the final 1 1/3 innings (15 pitches) with no hits or walks and one strikeout to improve to 3-1 on the year. On Sunday, he tossed four scoreless innings with one hit, zero walks and three strikeouts to earn his first career save.
John has appeared in six of the Sooners’ 10 games this year with a 3- 1 mark. He ranks first in the Big 12 with a 0.50 ERA, second with three wins, sixth with six appearances and a .167 opponent batting avg., and 10th with 15 strikeouts.
The Sooners return home to host a two-game midweek set with Arkansas Pine Bluff (March 6-7) before flying to Oregon for the Nike College Showcase. In Eugene, OU will play Connecticut (March 9) and a day/night doubleheader against West Virginia and Oregon (March 10). On Sunday, March 11, OU plays at Oregon State in Corvallis.
