AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 9 Oklahoma baseball team lost its first series of the season on Saturday and suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of  No. 10 Texas on Sunday. 

The Longhorns came back in the finale of the three-game set to win 8-5, despite trailing 5-4 in the fourth inning and being outhit, 12-9.


Michael Torres provided the go-ahead hit as he plated two runs in the fifth inning to give Texas a 7-5 lead off his triple to right.

The loss drops Oklahoma to 29-11 overall and 8-7 in Big 12 play.  Texas gave Chase Anderson (0-1) the loss after he surrendered the three runs in the fifth inning.  The Longhorns improved to 29-8 overall and 12-6 in Big 12 play.  Reliever Taylor Jungmann earned the win to improve to 4-2 as he worked 4 1/3 effective innings of relief. 

“It’s a disappointing weekend,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway.  “They outplayed us in all three games and knocked us out of first place.  We need to regroup and focus on the rest of the season.  There is still a lot of baseball to be played and we have ground to make up.”

In the second inning and the fourth inning, OU built leads of 2-0 and 5-4, but was unable to hold on and avoid the first three-game losing streak of the season.  Jamie Johnson led the Sooners with three hits and two RBIs.  Tyler Ogle and Chris Ellison also turned in multiple-hit performances with two hits each. 

Jamie Johnson drove a two-out pitch, with the bases loaded, up the middle of the infield to score the first runs of the game in the top of the second.  The Sooners’ 2-0 lead was the first of the series.  The runs were unearned after third baseman Michael Torres dropped a foul ball to prolong the at-bat.

The early OU lead gave Garrett Richards some needed run support as he battled out of the first two frames.  Texas put runners in scoring position in the first with runners on first and third with two outs but a fly ball ended the threat.  In the second inning, Richards placed Longhorns on second and third with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts halted the scoring opportunity.

In the bottom of the third, Richards again ran into trouble and was unable to keep Texas off the scoreboard with a one-out single and four walks.  The last two walks came with two outs and the bases loaded.  After the Longhorns walked into a tie, Richards left the game and J.R. Robinson came in out of the bullpen.  Texas took the lead on Robinson’s first batter, as Connor Rowe continued the two-out rally and singled to left to take a 4-2 lead.

The Sooners made short work out of the Texas lead as they countered in the top of the fourth inning with three runs off five hits.  Chris Ellison hit his second home run of the season and plated Tyler Ogle with the blast.  Tied at four runs apiece, Jamie Johnson connected for his third single of the game to chase UT starter Brandon Workman out of the game.  Kaleb Herren followed with a single off Jungmann before Bryant Hernandez brought home the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. 

Robinson could not work out of the fourth inning as Anderson relieved him to strike out the first batter he faced with runners on second and third and one out.  Unfortunately, instead of recording the second out of the inning, the batter reached first on a passed ball.  The runner from third scored in the next at-bat with a sacrifice fly to right that would have ended the inning.  Anderson got out of the frame with the score tied at 5-5.

Anderson was taken out of the game in the fifth inning after surrendering three runs, two coming off Torres two-run triple.  Michael Rocha (1 1/3 IP) and Ryan Duke (2 IP) held Texas scoreless for the final three frames.

Oklahoma returns to action this week at home as it hosts Wichita State on Wednesday, April 22 at 7:05 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on KOKC 1520 AM and televised on Cox channel 7 in Oklahoma City and channel 3 in Tulsa.
