NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Oklahoma baseball team captured the weekend series over Pepperdine courtesy of an 8-1 victory in the rubber match Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners improved to 11-1 through three weeks of play in 2013.
OU pounded out 10 hits as a team for the eighth time this season -- including a season-high three home runs -- to beat the Waves (7-5). Senior infielder Jack Mayfield launched his second round tripper of the year while senior outfielder/infielder Max White and senior infielder Garrett Carey each left the yard for the first time in 2013. Mayfield went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Carey finished 2-for-4. Freshman outfielder Craig Aikin went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, his fourth straight multi-hit game. Aikin led the Sooners on the weekend with a .462 batting average and a team-high six hits. Junior infielder Matt Oberste cracked his fourth double of the season and has now hit safely in 15 consecutive games dating back to the 2012 season. For the weekend, Oberste hit .455 with five hits -- including a double, a triple and a home run. He leads OU's bats through 12 games, hitting at a .444 clip with a team-high 20 hits -- including a team-high four doubles, two triples and four home runs -- to go along with a team-high 19 RBI.
Redshirt freshman southpaw starting pitcher Adam Choplick fanned three over 5.1 innings of work and improved to 2-0 on the season. Junior lefty Billy Waltrip came out of the bullpen and twirled 3.2 scoreless frames, striking out seven.
Pepperdine got on the scoreboard first with a single tally in the top of the fourth. Sophomore infielder Austin Davidson sent a leadoff base hit to center and scored two outs later on a double down the left field line by redshirt sophomore outfielder Bryan Langlois.
OU wasted no time answering back, though, putting up a five spot in the home half of the inning to take command of the game. Carey got things rolling with a one-out solo shot over the left field wall to knot the score at one-all. Freshman catcher Anthony Hermelyn followed by coaxing a walk, then moved to third one out later on a fielding error by the Waves that allowed Aikin to reach safely. Mayfield then delivered the go-ahead two-RBI double to plate Hermelyn and Aikin and put the Sooners in front, 3-1. White capped the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out, two-run homer over the left field wall.
Oklahoma tacked on three more insurance scores in the eighth. Hermelyn sent a leadoff single to left center, and freshman outfielder Hunter Haley followed by reaching second on a throwing error by Pepperdine. That set the table for Aikin's two-RBI single, allowing Hermelyn and Haley to score. Mayfield put an exclamation point on the victory with a solo shot over the left field wall.
The Sooners head south of the Red River to take on UT Arlington Tuesday at Clay Gould Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
