PULLMAN, Wash. -- The No. 16 OU baseball team snapped a two-game skid on Bryant Hernandez’s RBI double in the 11th inning which gave the Sooners a 9-7 win over Washington State in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Hernandez finished 3-for-4 on the afternoon with two runs driven in to help give Ryan Duke (1-0) the victory.

Duke was unable to record his first save of the season after he surrendered a three-run lead by allowing a trio of runs in the bottom of the ninth.  Despite the struggle, Duke finished with seven strikeouts and helped OU (6-2) even the series with Washington State (1-4).  Seth Harvey (0-1) was handed the loss for his final two innings, including two runs in the 11th inning.  Tyler Ogle drove in the Sooners’ other run in the final frame.

Before the game-winning hit, Matt Harughty (3-for-6, 3 RBIs) provided the big boost in the top of the eighth with his second home run of the season (fourth of his career) with two runners on base.  Harughty’s three-run shot plated pinch runner Chris Ellison, who came on to run for Garrett Buechele (3-for-4, RBI), and Jamie Johnson (2-for-5, RBI) after his fielder’s choice.

The home run was one of 17 hits for OU on Saturday, a mark that topped WSU (14) and more than doubled the Sooners’ Friday night total (6).

Similar to the start of game one on Friday, the Sooners scored early and took the game’s initial lead.  OU went up 1-0 in the top of the second inning with Garrett Buechele’s sixth RBI of the season, a run-scoring single that brought in Bryant Hernandez.

The Sooners took a 3-0 lead in the third frame on Ross Hubbard’s RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Hernandez.

In the bottom of the third, the Cougars answered and narrowed the gap to two runs as Sooner starter Antwonie Hubbard surrendered two hits in the frame.

Hubbard and the Sooners lost the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Alex Burg hit a two-run shot over the left-field fence.  The home run tied the game and WSU later took the lead on a RBI double by Michael Weber.

C.J. Blue was effective out of the Sooner bullpen after Hubbard, who allowed four runs in his four innings of work.  Blue allowed two hits and zero runs in 3 1/3 innings.  Hubbard allowed seven hits and two walks and struck out four.  Hubbard’s opposition, Jared Prince lasted five innings and gave up three runs, two earned, off seven hits and two walks.

In the top of the sixth, the Sooners tied up the Cougars at four runs apiece and let Hubbard off the hook in the decision.  Pinch hitter J.T. Wise was one of two Sooners to double in the inning as he scored on Jamie Johnson’s extra-base hit that sailed over the WSU left fielder’s reach.

The series continues with game two of the doubleheader on Saturday that begins at 6:40 p.m. CT.  Game two on Saturday will be broadcast live on KOKC 1520 AM.
