NORMAN, Okla. -
The Oklahoma baseball team bounced back from Friday's disappointing 8-4 loss to Lamar by cranking out 15 hits and relying on an excellent pitching performance by senior Evan Greusel to notch a 10-1 win over the Cardinals Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Greusel (2-0) picked up the win after pitching six strong innings, giving up just three hits and one run, and striking out seven. Freshman Jarod McAuliff made his OU debut, pitching two innings of one-hit ball with three strikeouts. The Sooners improved to 6-2 on the season, while Lamar fell to 6-6.
"I think today was important because a young team like ours needs to experience success," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "We bounced back in a strong way and this should help our confidence continue to build. Evan (Greusel) pitched an excellent ballgame and I think Jarod (McAuliff) pitched very well in relief. He should be a factor for us this season. We executed much better today than yesterday and although there is still a lot of room for improvement, this was a good win."
The Sooners got off to a fast start, as sophomore catcher Ryan Richardson hit a three-run home run to left field in the second inning. It was the second home run of his young Sooner career. OU had a big sixth inning as well scoring four runs and chasing Lamar starter Josh Gray, who took the loss (1-2).
Center fielder Matt Arkison went 1-for-2 with three runs scored and his substitution, Reggie Willits, continued his six-game hitting streak by going 2-for-2 with a run scored and one driven in. He is batting .625 on the season. Freshman third baseman Matt Bose went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs batting out of the cleanup position. Eddie Cornejo was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Denver Kitch drove in two runs and crossed the plate twice.
The Sooners will attempt to win the series with Lamar tomorrow at 1 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Sophomore Buddy Blair, 2-0 on the season, will get the start for Oklahoma.
