Quotes on Bedlam Baseball Series

Sooners address the media prior to Wednesday's practice

May 5, 2010

Head Coach Sunny Golloway
On the importance of winning the series:
“It’s important for us because it’s a Big 12 weekend we’ve won our last two (series) out. I think we faced an awful lot of adversity after losing two out of three at Tech, we were on the road at A&M and went 13 innings on Saturday and ended up winning two out of three.  Then we came home against second-place Kansas State.  We still think we can finish second in our league and that’s our goal.  So this weekend is going to be real important to us.

“Last year, we won every weekend series but two.  We won seven of nine in the Big 12 and won every weekend in pre-Big 12 (slate).  This year, we’ve won every weekend pre-Big 12.  We’ve won five out of seven (Big 12 series).  We have a chance to exactly repeat what we did last year.  We have a chance to go, realistically, 40, 41-15 if we can finish strong.  Last year we were 40-16, finished second in the league, and were a No. 7 national seed.  We can even improve on that at this point.  So, that’s why this weekend is going to be important.  We need to continue our momentum.  Bedlam is great.  It’s going to be exciting.  But more importantly we need to continue our momentum.”

On the new facility in Tulsa and playing the first game:
“I am looking forward to it.  I still yet to see the ballpark, I’ve seen it on TV, but in person. I know our guys are real excited.  It’s a beautiful ballpark from what I have seen.  It’s going to be the first one (Bedlam) and everyone wants to win the first one.  We were fortunate and blessed enough to win the last one at the old ballpark before they closed it down.  Now we are starting a new Bedlam tradition with going to the new ballpark and hopefully we can start it off the right way from the Sooners’ prospective of things.”

Sophomore third baseman Garrett Buechele
On losing the midweek game in Stillwater and the importance of this weekend’s Big 12 series:
“Going up to their place and losing still leaves a bitter taste in our mouths but this is when it really counts so we know we have to come out and play our best baseball this weekend.”

On the team’s recent offensive surge:
“Our team has been scoring runs with the best of them.  We’ve been playing against quality arms, like Oklahoma State has, so it’s prepared us for this weekend. We keep getting production from different guys in the offense.  It’s not just one guy every night.”

On the atmosphere of playing in Bedlam:
“It’s awesome getting to play in different stadiums like that, especially stadiums of this caliber.  These are great ballparks that people aspire to play when they are further in their baseball careers.  Being able to play in them now, in college, in front of rowdy college fans is a pretty awesome experience for us.”

On the importance of the rivalry in the state:
“The thing that makes it a great rivalry for us is that the fans care so much about it.  And the fact that the fans get so into it, it gives us extra adrenaline and emotion to play hard for them.”

Sophomore first baseman Cameron Seitzer
On looking forward to playing after missing last year’s series with a broken wrist:
“More than you all know. Last year being hurt for the OSU series, I saw what a big deal it was just watching from the stands and I just can’t wait to be a part of it this year.”

On the important of the series as the end of the season nears:
“Right now we are fourth in the Big 12 and we need to make a big run towards the Big 12 Tournament and get a good seed.  We have to come out in these next two (Big 12) series and take care of business.”
