Norman, Okla. -With the field set for the 2012 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association released the final list of All-Region honorees this week, with a total of seven Sooners on the list.
The sixth-ranked men's team shared the Midwest title with Big 12 foe Oklahoma State to earn its fourth-straight NCAA Championship appearance and second Midwest Regional title in the past three years.
Senior Patrick Casey, who completed the race in 30:28.61, led the Sooners with a team best third-place finish. Seniors Kevin Williams, Bill Kogel, Riley Masters and Andrew Weaver, along with sophomore Ryan Poland, each followed in the top-25 to earn All-Region honors.
Kogel has been recognized the last four years for his performance at the Midwest regional meet, while Williams takes home his third consecutive honor for the Sooners.
It is the first regional recognition for Casey, Masters, Weaver and Poland while at Oklahoma.
Senior Jessica Engel qualified to don the Crimson and Cream in the NCAA Championships as an individual with a 22:38.66 run, for a fourth-place effort.
Her finish at the Midwest Regional marked back-to-back All-Midwest Region honors for the senior, and her second consecutive automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
With six of its seven runners earning All-Region honors, the Oklahoma men's cross country team accounted for part of the Big 12's 21 total recognitions.
Among all conferences, the Big 12 fell behind the SEC, who had the most nods with 23, and the Big Ten, Pac-12 and Big EAST who each had 22.
All seven members of the Florida State men's squad earned All-Region honors, to be the lone team in the country to have each of their seven runners finish in the top-25 of their region (South). With six selections Oklahoma followed alongside of Tulsa, Syracuse, Stanford, Georgetown, Texas and Georgia with the second-best output nationally.
Louisville will play host to the 2012 NCAA Championships this Saturday, Nov. 17. The women's race will begin at 11 a.m. CT, followed by the men's race at approximately 12:15 p.m. CT.
For the first time since World War II, The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be held on a Saturday instead of a Monday - and for just the second time in a BIG EAST Conference City. With the new date formula prescribing the national meet be held on Saturday before Thanksgiving, and by virtue of the calendar having the earliest possible Thanksgiving this year, the meet will be the earliest in Division I history.
