NORMAN, Okla. -- Eleven members of the University of Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams were named to the 2012 Academic All-Big 12 Cross Country Team, the conference offices announced Tuesday afternoon. Nine Sooners earned first team honors as redshirt senior Jessica Engel and senior Molly Ferguson led the field as two of 13 student-athletes with a 4.0 grade point average.

Brandon Doughty (Health and Exercise Science), Patrick Gomez (Film and Video Studies), Bill Kogel (Multidisciplinary Studies), Ryan Poland (History), Kevin Williams (Marketing) and Dan Schubert (Health and Exercise Science) were members of the Sooner men's team awarded with All-Big 12 honors.

Doughty, Gomez, Kogel, Poland and Williams all received first-team honors, while Schubert was a second-team honoree.

Myranda Joiner (Multidisciplinary Studies), Robin Ray (Multidisciplinary Studies) and Candace Square (Health and Exercise Sciences) joined Engel (Health and Exercise Science) and Ferguson (Human Resources Management), as Sooner women that received the annual academic accolade.

It was Ferguson's fourth consecutive selection to the team and Engel's second.

A total of 50 men's student-athletes were honored, including 39 on the first team and 11 on the second team. Sixty-eight of the 77 members on the women's side earned first team recognition, with nine individuals collecting second team designations.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The 2012 Big 12 Cross Country Championships will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, in Austin, Texas at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course. The University of Texas will host the event for the second time. The top men's and women's teams are crowned league champion, while the top 15 individuals in each race are named all-conference.
