Sooners Announce 2003 Cross Country Schedule

A trip to Orono, Maine, for the 12th annual Murray Keatinge Cross Country Invitational on October 4 highlights the 2003 University of Oklahoma cross country schedule released today.

This will mark the Sooner cross country teams' first competition in the meet which draws teams from across the country.

When I was hired, we knew we wanted to upgrade our schedule, explained Rodney Rothoff, head cross country coach for the Sooners. This is a great meet for our student-athletes to participate in with a field that will present different challenges for us in a part of the country we haven't been to before.

OU will open the season on August 30 at the Hurricane Cross Country Festival in Tulsa. On Sept. 13, the Sooners will travel to the North Texas Invitational in Denton. Those runners who don't make the trip to Maine on Oct. 4 will travel to Stillwater for the Cowboy Jamboree.

On Oct. 18, the Sooners will participate in the Arkansas Chile Pepper Invitational, the final meet before the Big 12 Championship. The conference meet is set for Oct. 31 in Austin, Texas. The NCAA Midwest Regional Championship is scheduled for Nov. 15 in Stillwater. The NCAA Championships are set for Nov. 24 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The Sooner men return three lettermen from the 2002 team that finished 13th at the NCAA Regional meet. Seniors Joe McNair, Darren Hutchins and Jimmy Buchanan will lead OU this fall. All are coming off the best seasons of their Sooner careers.

For the Sooner women, only two letterwinners return from the 2002 squad and the majority of the roster is made up of freshmen.
